Hartford Oral History Program

Update – Winter 2006

ORAL HISTORY TRAINING : The Vermont Folk Life Center will be coming to Hartford in March to conduct two oral history training sessions. The sessions are free and open to the public. The sessions will include the basics of interviewing and will include opportunities for specific questions from volunteers. The sessions will be held at the Hartford Municipal Building :

Tuesday, 3/21 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
or
Saturday, 3/25 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Food will be provided.

The training is part of a historic preservation grant awarded to the Town of Hartford / Hartford Historic Preservation Commission by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation.

Greg Sharrow, Director of Education at the VFLC will be leading the training. Greg has a PhD in Folklore and Folklife with over twenty years of experience. Greg's work has been featured on Vermont Public Radio.

Andy Kolovos of the VFLC will be joining Greg in the training. He is a PhD candidate in Folklore who is nationally recognized for his work in audio field recording.

The training is a great way to learn from two experienced oral history professionals who regularly conduct training at the VFLC facility in Middlebury. Even better, they are coming to Hartford to bring the training to us. Call Matt Osborn at 295-3075 if you plan on attending the training and please help us spread the word about it.

We would like to thank the volunteers and interviewees. As you probably know, names keep getting dropped from our list of prospective interviewees due to folks passing away. New names are also being added so you can see that it is important to keep plugging away on the interviews. For interviewers, we are hoping that you can find time to interview someone this year. Please refer to the attached list of people to be interviewed. It will help greatly if you let Pat Stark know who you are planning to interview so we don't get more than one person trying to interview someone on the list. You can reserve the machine, pick up the paperwork and tapes from her as well. It is important that the correct type of tape and machine are used to ensure a quality recording that can be transcribed.

TRANSCRITIONS : A historic preservation grant awarded to the Hartford Historic Preservation Commission by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation will result in transcriptions of all of the audio tapes in the Hartford Oral History Project collection to date. Transcriber Monica Chiren of Washington , Vermont has been hired to transcribe and index the tapes. Work is underway. The project will be completed by the end of March.

The Hartford Historical Society will be printing excerpts from the transcripts in their newsletter and would like to list them on their website. However, the Historical Society is currently without a webmaster. If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, etc. for other uses or ways to make them available to the public, please let us know.

EQUIPMENT UPDATE : We have not obtained any new equipment – if you have a suggestion for equipment that will help, please let us know. Arthur Peale is currently attempting to design and build wooden cases for the two machines we have as the life expectancy of the cardboard/Styrofoam boxes they are currently in is very limited. A reminder that we do have one external microphone for the machines and it is necessary to use this with folks that have weak voices [usually older ladies]. Again, let Pat know that you'd like to use it. Pat is available at 295-3077 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hartford Municipal Building .

HARTFORD HISTORY VIDEO : The Town of Hartford/Hartford Historic Preservation Commission received a historic preservation grant from the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation to produce a Hartford history video. The video will be shown at the Downtown White River Junction Visitor Center and the Quechee Gorge Visitor Center . The Town will team up with the Videography Class at the Hartford Area Career Technology Center and Teacher Bob Franzoni. Work on the project just started. Completion is expected in the spring of 2007. As part of the project, the Videography Class will be conducting oral history interviews of Hartford residents.

NEED : Does anyone have or know of anyone that has a computer capable of transferring cassettes to CD media? If we can get this done, our tapes could be used by the Videography Class for the Hartford History Video Project as well as make it easier for other public uses.

CONTACT INFORMATION : If you would like to contact us or if you have any questions about the Oral History Project, please feel free to call or e-mail either of us. Also, please contact us if you do not want to receive future mailings.
